ADDING INSULT TO INJURY
UP Administration continues to burden the already injured studentry
UP Administration continues to burden the already injured studentry
As the last batch of Iskolars ng Bayan, who were free from the 300% Tuition and other Fees Increse (TOFI) graduates today; we, the undersigned student organizations, maintain our stance against the continuous implementation of ToFI as it cuts through the line of our government's social responsibility and only steers the university towards corporate schemes.
TOFI is just one among the numerous state-abandonment manifestations and anti-student orientation of the current UP Administration under the presidency Emerlinda Roman. How could we forget the threats of losing our sole representation in the Board of regents? The UP High Closure, the laboratory increases, the anti-student provisions of the student code, the rental of UP properties for the benefit od the commercialized capitalist industries, the perennial campus militarization and student surveillance, the intensified attacks on our freedom of expression and other campus repressions faced by the UP studentry.
Amidst the global economic depression, these moves by the UP Administration is cleady adding insult to injury. They should see that the nation, the Filipino people and the students are in great injury facing this quagmire of crisis.
Until the administration proves that the p40M coming from the fully implemented TOFI can make up for the P4 B budget deficit in UP, the become equally ineffective in lobbying the government for higher budget appropriation.
More so, until there will be proofs that expensive education reslts to quality education; ToFI proves to be a wreckage of constitutionally-guaranteed right of every Filipino to equally accessible education.
Again, we are injured and we are crying over the worsening crisis of Philippine Education, the deteriorating quality of learning, the obsolete and inadequate school facilities, the rising cost of education and the alarming level of campus repressions.
What the Iskolars ng Bayan need now is an Administration ready to cater our needs and calls.
We are calling for change. We are calling for the ouster of President Emerlinda Roman who chose to be an instrument of the fascist state rather than cater the interests of the Iskolar ng Bayan.
When everything has been said but not done, and when the administration continues to fail following its necessary sense of deep social responsibility, we still stand firm that every P1,000, P600, P400/unit payers deserves a rollback, and every UPCAT passers deserves UP Education.
As long as UP dministration's commercialized and exploitative character continues, and Roman refuses to step down; then they will have to wrestle with the inevitable restlessness of the student movement.
